can anyone please tell me what (mirroring, striping, stripe mirroring, spanning, raid 5) mean?
i just got a SATA 500gig harddrive and trying to get it up and running.
already have 40gig IDE harddrive with OS (win xp pro) running and want to add the 500gig
also ,maybe as slave if posible.
    thank you , in advance

  2. Since you just want 2 drives with 2 different drive letters ignore raid.

However this will give you an idea of what raid is and the different levels and their usage.

SATA drives don't slave or master like PATA drives.
Each SATA drive goes to it's own SATA port.
    You'll have 1 40GB PATA, and 1 500GB SATA HDD.
RAID won't be possible, and if it was possible (depending on the array you chose) you could've ended up turning your 500GB drive into a 40GB drive.

TBoneit, thank you for the info w/reply.
KBeee, thank you for your response also. my 500gig shows up as 465. gig in my device manager
but i can't find it anywhere else on my computer.
does it need a differnt OS,or can i use the one that's on the 40gig?

    Thanks again to all.

It needs to be partitioned and formated to be used. Go to 'Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management (Local)' and you should see it. R click on it and you will be given the option to partition and format it. Probably just needs the format, though. Or the 'Wizard' may start up and offer to format it when you get to the 'Disk Management page. I would do a quick format with that large of drive. A full format will take a fair amount of time.

  8. BTW here is the link for the levels of raid that I forgot to include before for anyone interested.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID

redwudz, a shortcut for disk management. Right Click on "My Computer" and pick manage which wil bring up Computer management. For easier and quicker than going to the control panel.
    Cheers

Thanks, TBoneit. I always forget about the 'shortcut'. And it doesn't hurt others to know where it's actually located. You can also make a permanent start menu shortcut to 'Administrative Tools' and 'Computer Management' from the 'Start Menu>Properties>Customize>Advanced>System Administrative Tools'.
