    Hi,
I want to recode some mp3 at a lower kbps. It looks as if ffmpeg can do that (you can select your kbps) but the resulting files are 0k (empty). Can anyone help?
I am on MAC. I tried compressor but it doesn't ave an mp3 output.

    Thank you!

First, MP3 is an audio format. Are you sure that VIDEOhelp.com
is the right place to be?

    But I digress.

Get a copy of Amadeus (free to try). Read in the MP3, do a
save-as, select MP3, and set the desired bitrate via the
    options button.

  4. For audio-only files, you have to check the "invert mapping" box under the Audio tab in ffmpegX.

You may also use Audacity. It's free, and performs many useful audio processing functions in addition to sample-rate conversion.

Here is a solution I have offered for people who want just the audio track from a video, but it would work in your instance as well. Try this:
    http://geek.thinkunique.org/2007/09/04/make-an-mp3-out-of-your-video/

It is a droplet onto which you drop your decrypted vob or mpeg or avi, and the resulting file is a mp3.

Not so much forgot as to have preferred alternatives for this sort of thing. Particularly when downsampling, having the ability to do some additional signal processing is often helpful, and for those sorts of tasks, Audacity is a very nice tool to have around.

That said, iTunes is indeed a good recommendation for pure sample-rate conversion. And it's almost certainly on the poster's hard drive already.
