I am having trouble compressing 36 hours of raw footage onto regular DVD-Rs. Was wondering if anyone has ever done this successfully with one hour of raw footage and how long it took. I am trying to get as many one hour tapes of raw interview footage onto a DVD as I can (image quality isn't too much of a concern; it doesn't have to look pristine, just viewable for archival sake).
What's the best compression to use to reduce this much raw footage onto a DVD?
Thanks!
Steve

it's a bit per seconds question. dvd is mpeg-2 and basically anything under 3000 bit per second or about 180 min with 192kbps audio is unwatchable. use this bitrate calculator to do the math.

If you are happy to get down to VCD resolution then you can get up to 8 hours on a single layer disc. The quality will be VHS or less.
If it doesn't have to be a DVD Video disc then Xvid or Divx encoded material, playable on many standalones, will allow you to get 12 hours of pretty good quality on a single layer disc.Read my blog here.
