I recorded a video on my DVD recorder and want to share the files with my friend online but the file size is too big. I wanted to convert them to a mpg format so I can shrink the size to chunks of 200mb. I am fumbling using MPG2Cut and in a practice run just skimmed 15 mins from the file which reduced the size in half. I did not think it would compress it so much. The outfile has trouble seeking and fast forwarding. The audio appears to be in sync but I think that it did not index the file properly because of the seeking problem. Can anyone recommand a better tool or any advise using this tool? Thank you for all your help.

VOB2MPG will (surprise) extract the mpg content from VOB structures.

I like Womble for editing mpeg-2 material. Many like VideoRedo. Neither are free though.

Thanks, I just tried using TmpGenc to custom compress the file and it came out very bad.

I'll check out Womble since they have a free 30 day trial. There is a reason why I passed on VideoRedo that I cannot remember.

    Thanks for the reply back.

I just downloaded the Superbowl from alt.binaries.tv in dvix format and it looks great. First half and second half, 2 cd's at 700 mb each. They both fit on a dvd. It's just the game though. No commercials, no half time show.

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning. Don't download tv and I don't see what your post has to do with editing a recorded dvd.

First of all do NOT tell me or anyone else for that matter what we can or cannot do with our computers or our internet service. You may have a right to tell us what we may or may not post to your group here but that's as far as it goes. I am not in the habit of downloading commercial movies to take away monies from money grabbing movie studios, BUT to download a video presentation that was broadcast free of charge to the world is in my opinion my right. I have not taken any money from anyones pocket. The point of my post was, the individual was having a problem with a recording & I was offering a possible solution to that problem, that being instead of going through the process of doing a lot of conversion work he could just simply get the said program from another source & save himself a lot of needless work. I was not suggestion to anyone to lie, cheat or steal. I was just trying to offer an easy solution to a problem.

Don't kill the messenger. The NFL is VERY protective of their copyrighted telecasts, especially the Super Bowl. Baldrick was quite correct to issue a warning. This website obeys the law, regardless of what others do.

I just gotta bite on this one:

First of all do NOT tell me or anyone else for that matter what we can or cannot do with our computers or our internet service.
Ever hear of MPPA or ASCAP these are just two originizations that have been very aggressive in telling what you can do with your computer.

BUT to download a video presentation that was broadcast free of charge to the world is in my opinion my right.
The superbowl was not free to anyone. Local stations pay the NFL for the rights to broadcast and sell advertising space. Your cable provider pays the local broadcasters for the rights to carry the channels on the cable system.

So you see nothing is free. Why do you think the NFL has a copyright notice at the start and end of the program?

My advice is NEVER tell anyone you downloaded copyrighted material.

Thanks to Baldrick for a great site.

Based on the above arguments, looks like the OP is about or already committed a copyright violation .
