I am about to receive a new pc and want to run it alongside my existing one to maximise my productivity.
Both are dual monitor setups. I want to utilise a KVM switch so I only need to have 1 keyboard/mouse.
Searching online it would seem that there is little choice for dual monitor KVM switches, at least at reasonable prices.
I'm looking for a way to possibly use a single monitor KVM on a dual monitor setup - there's numerous single monitor KVMs available in the sub £30 range. Could I run the second monitor output from each pc through a 2 Port / Way VGA Monitor Switch Box and still have dual monitor functionality with no problems? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Port-Way-VGA-Monitor-Switch/dp/B000J249JC
Obviously it would be not as convenient as the one-switch solution needing to switch both boxes each time I changed pcs, but that's not a hardship.
(If this is possible I'll look for something a bit higher spec than the version linked above if it is deemed necessary. If I had any technical skill at all I'd even think about building the KVM switch into this box as well - it certainly seems big enough)
I obviously want to keep as good quality on the monitors as possible, however I do have a separate monitor for cc work.
I'm using 2 Samsung Syncmaster VGA monitors.
Alternatively I would buy this KVM http://www.comlynxdirect.co.uk/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=55 and add a couple of connectors to tie both pcs in to one set of speakers. Certainly £65 (incl. vat + delivery) is not an excessive amount of money, but every penny saved can be used elsewhere (more hard drives/better quality cabling etc)
    All input is appreciated.

    Cheers.

The second KVM listed would make your life a bit easier.

Or you could get the first listed one, and a second similar unit that also additionally switches the keyboard and mouse. The speakers I would just use two sets, but you could probably switch them with some boxes. You need to figure in cable costs also. You will need extension cables that match the sockets on the PCs, the switch boxes and the monitors. That could add to the overall cost.

Those simple mechanical switches are cheap enough and work fairly well if you keep your cables short.

One similar to this might work: http://www.computergate.com/products/item.cfm?prodcd=WSB1505092
That's a US distributor, but it's probably built by the same company as the one you listed.

Thanks. It might just be easier to go with the second one in my post.

    Greets,

It looks like you are going for one that has a switch you manually flip to change between the two. That is good. Be carefull of ones that you press a key on your board to swap between the computers. I made that mistake as my nicer wireless keyboard does not have the Scroll Lock button that the KVM switch wanted and it does not want to let me softcode a secondary key to use as a substitute.

    Cheers,
    Rick

  6. I have this KVM switch and it works very very well. I dont know if it has dual monitor support but it DOES have speaker inputs.

If I understand what you are trying to achieve, are you just looking to use one keyboard and mouse across two PC's, where both PC's have there own monitors...

If that's the case then there is a software solution available as long as you can network the two PC's.

    http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

With this program I have been able to basically run one machine as a server, and the other as a client, and use one keyboard and mouse across both PC's, whereby the only thing connecting the two machines is that they are on the same network.

This software even lets you share the keyboard and mouse even if the machines are running different operating systems.

No - both machines have dual monitor setups which I want to maintain. When switching via the KVM I want both monitors to be allocated to the same pc.
