Yep, as a Laser Disc owner, I know the risks. I haven't bought into this technology and I've made sure that my friends know enough not to be burned, either.

Laser had a really nice run....bought my 1st player in 1986 and the last player made was circa 2002 or so.

It is a relatively easy explanation . . Sony is not interested in offering upgrade paths for their products - they prefer you buy a new one.

Incidentally, directly downloadable firmware updates have been out since October.

LOL, a self-evidently specious line of reasoning if ever there was one... generally almost all things (except gamer stuff) works just fine on moderate PCs. Why are you trying so hard to defend a technology / brand ? No skin off my nose whether it works or it doesn't, I'm interested in the stated effect on consumers - and one stated the effect.

We're not talking about a hardware manufacturer upgrading the firmware to make it incompatible with what the customer might want to do (e.g. Apple and the iPhone), we're talking about upgrades made to the software (movies) by studios that might make them incompatible IF firmware updates aren't available. Who's the one screwing the customer?

I suppose next we'll hear how the customer is getting screwed when those who bought from one side or another can't watch the new movies when a victor is declared and all the studios move to one side.

Sony. They are the ones who created this system for Blu Ray and sold it to the movie studios. They simply placed their obsession with copy prevention over customer service and satisfaction. Not exactly something new for Sony. Apparently a number of the studios feel similarly. The backlash for releasing blu ray movies that don't play in blu ray players will be fun to watch.
