I found this article on Blu-ray interesting.

Do unto others....with a vengeance!
-
As to why the old players are not upgradeable:
"We needed to create momentum and get the players on the market. If we had postponed launch to add in the hardware for the latest features, we would not be in the situation we have today."
But he said the likely victims of the Blu-ray profiles issue was almost certainly a limited audience.
"The guys that bought the first Blu-ray players are the guys who bought the first laser discs. They know the risks." -
I eagerly await Nilfennasion's post explaining why this is not a bad thing that BluRay's early adopters got screwed on this.
-
I'm sure some Blu-ray fan will have an explanation for this.
Do unto others....with a vengeance! -
Yep, as a Laser Disc owner, I know the risks. I haven't bought into this technology and I've made sure that my friends know enough not to be burned, either.
-
Laser had a really nice run....bought my 1st player in 1986 and the last player made was circa 2002 or so.
I don't feel burned. -
Gotta love the PS3.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
Edit:
Ah, I fukking give up, ya know? You can only tell so many people so many times that this is no different to what Toshiba and Warners pulled with DVD in 1999/2000 before you get sick of it all and just want to go kick a favourtist in the teeth.
So, jman, you go back to telling yourself that Toshiba could not possibly have done anything to earn the hostility of early DVD adopters (who are quite overwhelmingly represented among Blu-ray supporters). Like the punk rockers I have been overdosing on this morning would do, I will just look at your ability to excuse the sins of one group by ignoring those of your preferred supplier and be glad I do not do any business with you."It's getting to the point now when I'm with you, I no longer want to have something stuck in my eye..." -

Toshiba made ONE mistake. They didn't develop and push a "superior" copy protection scheme to the studios - Sony did.

because he cannt play some of the new blue poo films. This guy has always been an fony/sony supporter (money no object)
Well done fony/sony.So people carry on buying blue poo.But dont fu**ing moan when the sony/fony monoply starts
charging you silly money for films and games.
Anyway why do we have accept just because a games consul has its own format that all films have to go that way.
Can you imagine someone like sega saying there format is best and eveyone has to go sega.
fony/sony just stuff your consul up your ar*e and keep to your games where they belong and leave the natural progression to get going.
Thank you all you DUMB ar*e game consul players. -

Of the 10k system, most of that is likely to have gone on the tv and sound system. Therefore, the 10k cost of the sytem is irrelevant. He can still use his sytem to watch BD, just not PIP - big deal!
Sure there are people who buy early for tech - I bought the XBOX360HD drive for the sake of a few films. It's unlikely I'll use it again once all the studios go BD. I knew the risks when I bought it.

"knew the risks" is a cop-out for "we have your money, we don't care anymore"

Oh please!
Every time we buy/build a PC we know it will need replacement in a few years if you want to run the latest stuff with any degree of usefulness.
I don't like it, but being a realist I accept it.Regards,

We're not talking about a hardware manufacturer upgrading the firmware to make it incompatible with what the customer might want to do (e.g. Apple and the iPhone), we're talking about upgrades made to the software (movies) by studios that might make them incompatible IF firmware updates aren't available. Who's the one screwing the customer?
I suppose next we'll hear how the customer is getting screwed when those who bought from one side or another can't watch the new movies when a victor is declared and all the studios move to one side.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
