dv/ulead capture, aspect ratio problem

i'm capturing DV from my camera using Ulead Studio 9, and for some reason it insists on saving the video file as 16:9 ratio. so it's all stretched and wrong. it appears fine in the capture window, then when i go to the edit page (to trim junk off the start/end) or indeed open the file in any other program, it's all stretched out of proportion. right clicking on the file in ulead and selecting properties reveals that it's in 16:9 format, when it clearly should be 4:3

what the hell am i doing wrong, i've been at this for 2 days now and it's killing me !

Is this by any chance a tape that had 16:9 previously recorded on it that you recorded over?

Anyhow it could be a few different things, 16:9 and 4:3 both share the same resolution. The only difference is what it's flagged as. Not sure if you can in VS but you should be able to change the flag 4:3 either when you encode or author. Check your project settings.

As to why you're getting 16:9 in the first place, either the cam has the footage incorrectly flagged, the project settings you have...

I'd start by looking at your project settings.

ulead captures it apparently at 4:3 because it appears correctly in the capture window. i think its ulead that then decides to save it as 16:9 because its only after this point it appears incorrectly.

ulead studio lets me SEE in the properties that its at 16:9 but everything is read only... no way of changing this. and project settings doesn't seem to have any clue either. indeed the software in general doesn't give you a lot of choice in anything.

any more ideas ?

Try capsferring with WinDV and then import the avi file as a source and see if you get the same results in Ulead. (That should tell you if Ulead is flagging it as 16:9 or if the source is actually flagged wrong).

Edit: Nevermind. I misunderstood your last post, it appears you've already determined that it's Ulead that's causing the problem.

Not sure about VS9 but all the capture components in the ulead programs that I have do that, the capture preview is at 720x480 which is the resolution of the video. You'll get the same size for preview no matter what you're capturing.

Try the Ulead forum, it should allow you to do that but I don't have a copy here to see how. FYI that program has a lot of settings, you just need to look. The manual is usually a good place to start.

its OK, i seem to have solved it. downloaded the panasonic DV codec and all is well now.
