Have you verified under windows that there is something on the disc ?

I would also try using Imgburn in Build mode - it works fine under Vista

If you can see the files it may be a compatibilty issue. Do you have any other brand of discs to test with ?

Have you used these discs before ?

Are you using ISO/UDF disc format when you burn data DVDs, and making sure not to burn multisession DVDs?

Imgburn defaults to ISO/UDF, if I remember correctly.

It's probably a media issue. TDK may be outsourcing their DVD-R discs and maybe the new ones aren't very good. I have the DVP-642 and it generally plays any DVD-R I throw at it, but it's been years since I've bought any burnable DVD other than ones made by Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. According to http://www.nomorecoasters.com TDK DVD-R discs were very high quality, but again, it's possible that they've changed who makes them and maybe the ones you have aren't very good. Verbatim has outsourced all of their DVD+R DL discs to India and while they mostly appear to be OK, I would say that overall they are somewhat inferior to the ones that used to be made in Singapore. You'd not get a coaster in a 25 pack of the ones made in Singapore, but you might get 1 coaster now from the Made in India media. For best results, I personally recommend that people use either Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden single layer DVD discs.

Note also Ai Haibara's excellent post. Multisession is a horrible idea and this will definitely be a problem if you did that. Anytime you burn anything you want to play on a DVD player, you MUST without exception burn it in a single session, finalize the disc, and if your burner gives you a choice between "Disc at once" or "Track at once" use "Disc at once" mode.

I know nothing about Ashampoo but around here we recommend using the free ImgBurn program because it works correctly all of the time and many other burning programs do not.

thanks so much for all the replies!

well i know the tdk dvd-r and dvd+r work for sure because when I burn dvdr files on them they work fine on the phillips...

it might be the multisession issue..i was unaware that img burn could burn data files onto dvd..do I just add the xvid files in build mode of imgburn, any other settings i must change?
