  1. hey everyone! i'm looking for a free authoring program(at least i think that what i'm looking for)something where i can edit by frame if necessary and, add effects if i like. i can't remember the last prog. i had but it was able to author/edit by frame. add effects for transitions and other useful features but, i haven't done anything like this recently due to a lack in the puter department. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

No, you're looking for an editor. Authoring apps author (makes the Video DVD structure from your already edited sources).
What flavor is your source material? mpg? AVI? Other?

The most recent version of virtualdub has the ability to apply some transitions, but it really is only an assemble editor, not a non-linear editor.

You would be better off looking for a cheap commercial editor in the bargin bin at your local computer store. Recent versions of Premiere Elements, Vegas Movie Studio or Ulead VideoStudio should be cheap, but will be capable of most of what you want.

Be aware though, not all codecs used in the avi container are designed for editing. Xvid/Divx for example, is an end viewing format, and many editors do not like to work with it.
