I am using MS WMM (came with XP Service Pack 2) to edit an AVI file. If I import a 1.9GB clip into WMM and then save the clip in DV-AVI, the resulting file shrinks to 350MB. So obviously, in the process of saving the clip, WMM is also compressing the file. However, I don't want additional compression at this juncture....I just want to save the edited movie. Is there a work around? If not, is there another program that would let me to import, edit and save the movie as an avi file without adding additional compression?

If you just need simple cut and paste edits of DV AVI, you could use VirtualDub or VD Mod and add the Cedocida DV Codec. Save out as a direct stream copy and there is no re-encoding.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for the reply. But I need to add simple scene transitions, titling, etc. Nothing fancy, but more than simple splicing of scenes. Essentially nothing more complex than WMM. Any ideas. I don't mind buying a program in $100 range.

If you choose WMV as your output them WMM will squeeze the crap out of it. WMM can output as DV-avi, and I believe it doesn't re-encode the video you haven't touched.

If you want to use something that is a lot better, consider Premiere Elements or Vegas Movie Studio. Both will allow you to grow and move on to more sophisticated things before you have to spend more money.

If you believe your efforts will always remain modest and you will never need much more than the basics, consider Ulead VideoStudio
