I have a Canon HV20. It works great. I have VLC and HDVsplit, and both work wonderful. I've edited some video in Vegas Movie Studio, and it turned out like it should've (I think), but here's the question I need answered.

I want to burn blu-ray movies, so I can watch them in my blu-ray player. I know I need a bluray burner.

Any help on the software side would be great. Should I stick with Vegas Movie Studio for editing? What do I need to burn HD Content to HDDVD or Bluray discs?

You need a blu-ray authoring tool, https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/authoring-bd-hd-dvd . I guess I would upgrade to latest vegas and dvd architect for hd video.

I haven't tried it (I don't have Blue Ray player nor want one), but the latest version of Nero Vision supports burning AVCHD disks. In theory, You can use Nero Vision to convert to AVCHD and burn the files to a standard DVDR that is supposed to be compatible with Blue Ray players. At least that's the theory anyway.............
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

Only Vegas Pro can burn/read Bluray disc. You also need a Bluray Writer for your PC, still expensive at at least $600. A blank Bluray disc is at $25. See the spec for Vegas software below (row: video/Burn Blu-ray disc):

The last time I checked, Vegas softwares only support Sony's version of AVCHD (unless they have just issued support for non-Sony AVCHDs now).

Another less inexpensive option is to burn AVCHD disc using regular DVD media and regular red-laser DVD writer that you already have. Keep in mind that a DVD-5 can hold only about 40 minutes of high-def video at the most. You also need to have a Bluray player (or PS3) at around $400 to play these AVCHD disks.
