I'm sure it's been asked a few times before. I tried a search but did not come up with a suitable answer.

Here's my question. (bear in mind I'm a total newbie with this stuff)

I recorded video of my kids on my MiniDVD camcorder, and uploaded it on my hard drive via Adobe Premier Elements 2. I found the file on my hard drive and it was labeled VTS_01_1.vob BTW, it's a 20 minute video.

If I convert my "vob" file to something else, will it then work on YouTube? If so, what do I convert it to? I'm running Windows XP on a pretty new Dell computer. Could I possibly already have a program that will convert it for me? Obviously I have Adobe Premier Elements 2, but I'm not so familiar with this program.

In addition, if I can't upload it to YouTube, can I just convert it to a Windows Media file? For example, if I wanted my in-laws to see a video of my kids, I'd like to attach a link that they can download and have it play in their Windows media player.

    I hope this makes sense.
    thanks in advance.

I would convert it to avi divx or xvid with AutoGK and then upload to YouTube. YOu can also probably upload the vob directly but it's probably too big.

...or try loading it in WMM, and save out as wmv (wma is audio...) of desired size and quality. Or if you want to be cutting edge, turn it into a SilverLight application, using Microsoft Expression Encoder. Much like YouTube, but you have better control over quality.

WMM didn't work for me. For some reason, it wouldn't recognize a VOB file.

Sorry - that figures, as VOB isn't a video file format as such, just a part of a Video DVD that's got lost.
Extract the mpg out of the vob with vob2mpg first, and load the mpg? WMM should load mpg at least.
