As far as all-in-ones go, ConvertXtoDVD is one of the more highly thought-of ones on here. If you want better quality, you'd be better off with separate encoders and authoring software. Click on tools to the left for tons of tools. Guides are also available in the Guides section, also to the left.

ConvertXtoDVD - Not Free. Simple, reliable, reasonable quality
FAVC - Free, relatively simple, slower than ConvertXtoDVD, higher quality
DVD Flick - Free Simple, slower than ConvertXtoDVD, slightly higher quality

and plenty more along with those : AVI2DVD, TheFilmMachine etc.

Better using convertxtodvd as it can compress 4 hours of avi files onto one blank 2 hour dvd. Nothing wrong with the quality. You can actually get 2 two hour films on one blank 2 hour dvd.

I thought most of the programs guns1inger mentioned did that, though? The quality issue is subjective, however... the general recommendation around the VH forums seems to be that it's best to keep it around 2-3 hours.

But I'm not sure the OP wants to fit more than one AVI to a DVD-Video disc, yet, anyway.

I would put FAVC up against ConvertXtoDVD for quality. It can also produce half-D1 resolution DVDs, which will give you better quality than full-D1 at the 4 hour plus mark, and can then do VCD resolution for those that need to fit 6 - 7 hours on a disc.

If you want the best quality, especially if you want to put several hours on a DVD, it will take time to encode. That is dependent on your CPU speed. It may encode faster if you lower the bitrate and quality, if that's what you want.

It may look dark on a computer monitor and look fine on a TV, if that's your final destination. I would be careful with lightening it. You might try playing a sample back on your TV before you make that sort of adjustment.
