    Hi all,

I have a problem with a Sony CCD TR77 Video8 Handycam - a friend lent me this video camera (vintage 1993) because I have some Video8 tapes that I want to capture to my Hard Drive

The tapes do not play properly - the Horinzontal is out of sync

I remember that one Video8 tape was a dub from a High Quality VHS camera and another tape is one I made with a different Video8 camera many years ago

Could it be that I used a Hi8 camera to record these Video8 tapes and the Sony CCD TR77 only plays standard Video8 tapes?

The tapes I have are either Sony MetalMP120 or Sony MetalHG120

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    TIA

A Video8 camcorder will not properly play a Hi8 tape. Usually the picture looks garbled. Horizontal sync should be similar. Are you sure the issue isn't PAL vs. NTSC? In any case ask around for a Hi8 or Digital8 camcorder loan and see if that can play your tape.

    Thanks for the info edDV,

BTW, what do you think of the Sony Handycam CCD TRV138? for $215.99

Will this unit play Video8, Hi8 and Digital8

    TIA

Nope. It is a Hi8 so will only play Hi8 and Video8.

A Digital8 camcorder or deck will play all 3. Problem is Sony is discontinuing Digital8 but there are many still in the stores or available used. The better ones are from the 2002-2004 time frame.
