My Canon digital (still) camera saves movies in Motion JPEG AVI files (I verified this with G-Spot). I figured TMPGEnc would be the surefire way to convert these AVI files to MPEG-1 files, but when I try to open one of these movie files in TMPGEnc, I get an error about the file not being supported. However, I can play these files in Windows Media Player without any problems.

Is there a way to get TMPGEnc to recognize Motion JPEG AVI files? If not, how should I do this conversion?

OK, so now I've run into a problem with SUPER. The MEncoder encoder is garbage - every video I convert becomes much darker and it's hard to see anything. The ffmpeg encoder works nicely most of the time, except that for some of my files, the output MPEG file has a black screen for the video. The only thing in common with these files is that they are short (less than 10 seconds), whereas all the "working" video files are longer.

    Any ideas?

Have you tried change the directshow reader priority in tmpgenc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in? Move it to the top of the list. If you use tmpgenc or tmpgenc plus and not tmpgenc xpress.

In my VCD days, the AVIs TMPGEnc couldn't load naitvely, I loaded in VirtualDub instead, and frameserved to TMPGEnc. Solved most issues for me.

Awesome! Changing the priority of the DirectShow reader fixed the problem with TMPGEnc, so I will use that. Thanks!

Should the DirectShow plugin always be at the top?
