Without reencoding a divx movie is there anyway sound could change? I mean is there a way sound on a movie on the pc could distort from being corrupted or any other way?

It's just the sound seems more distorted on it than usual.

Audio, like video, has to be decoded. If this isn't done correctly, then yes, you can get distortion or interference (for want of a better term).

First test : Does it sound like this on another machine ? If so, it is the file.

Second test : Does it sound the same if played through VLC ? If so, it is most likely the file.

If i havent encoded the video at all and its just on the pc, can the sound just change even though i havent done anything to the file at all? i mean can the sound just distort on its own or can corruption affect sound?

Unlikely. If the file is corrupt, then you have HDD problems, and would likely be seeing video corruption and/or problems with other files.

Are you actually having a problem, or is this a hypothetical question ?

As I said in my previous post, the most likely explanation is a change in the codecs used to play back the file, or it was always screwed.

Sometimes, different decoders produce different results. Some settings like audio volume or audio layers won't be decoded the same way with different decoders.

Some players, like Gom and VLC use their own decoders and you can test with them if the problem is on the decoding or in your file: If it plays different on those players, it is a codec mess up of your system. If the audio remains the same, it's your file.
