    Welcome phillyrider

    As you no doubt have discovered , there is a difference between commercial dvd's , and other content , such as avi's , where ever they have been retrieved from .

    So here's a brief outline :

    A: Use gspot to determin avi internals ... watch for VBR audio .
    B: What programs where used to perform this conversion to dvd process .
    C: Dvd burner brand and model , and has the firmware been updated .
    D: Media used , and burnt at what speed .

    Once we have that , we will be able to help you with further advice .

    Well , windows vista home premium is a real problem .

    Imgburn works , but try verbatim or ty's (dvd-r) , burn at half media's max , or 4x (safer)
    I didnt get a chance to test gspot under vista , just yet , but it's still worth a shot .

    Gspot will tell you the internals of an avi , and if appropriate codecs are installed .

    Sony media has been getting some bad reports in forums , but his might be the drives firmware needs updating .

    There's a big difference between "backups of original dvds" , and "converted avi to dvd" .

    If you have an original conversion , created from an avi , that worked , try it in the unit and test ... you may need more than one , to rule out an issue with media being at fault .

    To determine a fault with player , we need to know what the audio from those avi's was converted to .

    Copy one of the vobs from the affected disc to harddrive ... now this is another question ... media info ... will it ... if it dose , then it can help by showing the internals of the vob ... check audio out .

    Mp2 = no good
    Ac3 = 64 (no good) ... the higher , the better

    Avi2dvd , convertxtodvd , xilisoftavitodvd ... I doubt they be serious under vista , although they fuction .

    I use a few products from mediostream ... but ran across this a while back that might be worth giving a try , its free , and vista supported ... though the menu stuff is very basic , and it only use's lp format , not full d1 resolution in output .

    http://pcwin.com/DVD___Video/Multimedia_Player/neoDVD_Video_8_LP/index.htm (22.9 MB)

    If , by chance , the test dvd created by this program works , then the issue is from the products used to do the original conversions ... and not media or player related ... that would be nice to know .

    ----

    So in order :

    1: Having an original dvd , converted from avi , known to work before ... use it to test player .

    If no audio issue , then avi audio , conversion products become suspects ... if new batch of media involved , it to .

    2: If audio issue , copy vob from dvd to hd , and use media info to check stats of contained audio .
    3: Use gspot on avi's , looking for VBR audio ... its not good , and most all-in-one products choke on it .
    4: Give neodvdvideo 8 lp a shot , its vista supported ... burn with imgburn to verbatim dvd-r at 4x

    Vista dosent help , it makes it a longer process to resolve , being not many are involved with the os to help .

    From this , it might be closer into finding the issue causing the problem .

    ----

    Im off ... got to go buy you know what ... but ultimate ... back to check how you go ... later
