  1. A few easy questions for some of you guys to answer for me. I have looked in the forums and just can't find the answers to specific questions. Forgive me if I missed the obvious.

First off here is what my system is:
    Pentium III 933mhz, 512 PC-133 Ram, ATI All-In-Wonder 128 Pro,
Pioneer DVR-A03, 3 Hard Drives, all 80GB or larger all 7200 RPM ATA-100
TMPGEnc 2.51.33.127 for Encoding, DVDit! PE 2.5.5 for DVD-R Authoring
Video Editing with Vegas Video 3, Usually use it's capture utility for DV & Analog Captures. I personally think the ATI softwear sucks big time!

Ok, I need to get good captures from my old collection of Laserdiscs, and original VHS, 8mm, & Beta tapes (Factory made originals not home recordings).

I get lots of dropped frames when recording through my ATI All-In-Wonder at 720x480 AVI, so I just started recording my collection to my Sony PC9 MiniDV camera and then to the computer in a second step. I never get dropped frames from my MiniDV to the computer via firewire. Well for some reason all my captures get sideways letterboxing (Black bars on the sides) if I use TMPGEnc to clip and resize the picture it adds so much more time to the encode (BTW I going to DVD-R) Why am I getting these bars?? And how the hell do I avoid them??

Also If I capture AVIs at less then 720x40 with my A-I-W I don't get dropped frames. I know none of the formats I'm capturing from are really 720x480 anyways, so what capture resolutions should I use for each of these formats (LD, VHS, 8mm, Beta)? I'm also kinda stupid when it comes to using different codecs for captures. Should I just install this huffy codec everyone brags about and try to capture AVIs at 720x480?

And then also my final stupid question. DVDit! PE 2.5.5 will accept MPEG-2 files in the following capture sizes 720x480, 704x480, and 352x480. Should I capture high then encode into one of these sizes, or should I capture and encode always the same size? As is I'm gonna keep every DVD around 60 minutes so i can use maximum bitrate, I don't wanna loose any quality then I have to.

Thanks for all the help you guys can give. I know it's alot to ask, but you guys really tend to know what our talking about!!

  2. Ditto on the VHS Capture...I am running my VHS from a S-Video system, I get good captures by setting VirtualDub Capture at 352x480, then resize to 352x240 with framserve in TMPGEnc. My question is how can I get a "Sharper" picture? The colors are real good, but the overall picture is a little blured after recording to VCD with Nero, this is on the TV, on the PC it looks great in the raw AVI format or even the MPEG format with the standard VCD templates. This also applies to the Capture of TV, the cable format is Digital Cable so again the picture in the raw is great. Many thanks, as a result of information I received from this site I was able to get to where I am now, just one more little bit of infomation and I'm a happy camper.....
