sorry, I searched but couldn't find...what direction (radial) is a DVD read? Is it from the inside out or the outside in? thanks

Going out, middle to edge.
Same as an LP.
You can see a disk that's only half-full has been written only on the part near the centre. -
Single layer discs read from the inside to the outside. Dual layer discs read from the inside to the outside, refocus the laser, then read back into the centre. This is for standard DVD Video.
I seem to remember a data write strategy for +R discs that allows for outside to inside, but I may be making this up.Read my blog here.

Layer1 = Inner to Outer, Layer2 (if exists) = Inner to Outer for PTP (Parallel Track Path), or Outer to Inner for OTP (Opposite Track Path)
With the best authoring/burning software, you have a choice depending upon the kind of material and the relative balance you give between Layer1 vs. Layer2 (where you can split etc). Most common is OTP.
HDDVD, BD = same as DVD
CD, LD = Layer 1 (Inner to Outer) style
LP, 45, 78, 16 rpm records = Outer to Inner (except for a few rare old ones)
