I need to convert from midi to wav/mp3. What is a good free tool to use? I’m having a difficulty with Audacity with those unusual squares, rectangles and piano keys to export as wav and mp3.

If you have a midi file, just load it up and play it, and use Audacity (or any audio app) to record it. I don't understand your problem with Audacity, as I have never seen the strange rectangles or piano keys that you mentioned. You should be able to use WavePAd to do it, however you may have to set the recording input through your Audio properties sheet.

Thanks for your quick response. When I import MIDI from the project tab of Audacity, this is what I get numbers, piano keys, and squares and rectangles:

All my projects from previous conversion to MP3 and WAV, I do exactly how you described. The midi file plays fine in WMP as a typical midi single instrument sound. I also did search and know other conversion freeware but I didn’t want junk software piling up in my computer, therefore, my post to cut down on the stuff that I’ll never use.

What you need to do is play the midi file in another player and then record with a seperate recording software. That is what guns1inger is saying in his previous post. MIDI is synthized music and is not easily converted like mp3 is. It uses different procedures to play. So simply play in a midi player and record simultaneously in a mp3 or wav recording software and you will have a copy of it.

Thanks for trying to clarify what guns1inger said. To be on topic, what do YOU use to convert Midi to Wav/ MP3?

I think I've only done it once really. I use soundblasters recording software whenever I need to record on system sound. I set it to "what u hear" and then it records whatever is playing. All you need to do is to make sure you set your recording software to "what u hear" and it will record.

I've used modplug for midi to wav. It has a great export feature that's quick and easy.

    EDIT:

Nevermind. I was thinking mod-to-wav, but was answering midi-to-wav.

I checked into why Audacity does not export to WAV from MIDI and has a funny visualization on importing the MIDI:

Audacity currently supports displaying MIDI files if you import them using Import MIDI in the Project menu.
Audacity does not support playing, recording, or editing MIDI files. It does not even support saving MIDI Tracks in a project file.
The current functionality is useful to only a small group of people who are studying algorithms that relate MIDI data to audio data and simply wish to see the visual representation of the MIDO data and how it lines up with the audio data.

But I do not still comprehend WMP ->Audacity. I don’t see any tools that enable direct recording into Audacity by playing MIDI, unless you mean record to some external device 1st. Can you give me a specific step by procedure, I would appreciate it.

Open Audacity and look at the available inputs (drop down list near the microphone levels). Look for one that is along the lines of What U Hear (creative use this), or Stereo Mix, or Wav. Use this as the input when recording in Audacity and you will record whatever noises your PC is playing, be it midi files, wav files or CD playback.

Wow! Thank you guns1inger and t0nee1 appreciate your help. The last post really helped me by changing the default option that kept me repeating the same error. Thanks again, guns1inger.
