I have sony Vegas 7 and someone told me that it could convert movies to look like old black and white grainy films. I fly Very large WWI radio control aircraft and think it would be cool to convert my flying movies to this media look to make them more real looking and possibly put together a film of some kind. does anyone know how this effect is acheived? I am very new to editing but several years ago used to use adobe preimere for a while and catch on pretty quick.

    thanks
    Joe

  2. DVInfo is a great place for Vegas stuff - lots of serious pros who happily share their tricks of the trade. There's an entire forum dedicated to it (the link will take you straight there).

Right-click on your clip and choose Event FX. In the list of filters this is one that will give you an old cinema look.

There is a similar filter for Virtualdub from the MSU group : http://www.compression.ru/video/old_cinema/index_en.html

It will if you also install Debug mode's Wax as a plugin.

Vegas isn't on this machine, so I couldn't remember the name of the filter when I posted before. I have since checked, and it is called Sony Film Effects. Try the Circa 1908 preset for something fairly extreme.

hey guys I got it working the way I like and it really looks great just like an old movie. it also makes the models look just like the real thing and not a model. thanks for the help. now if only i can save it to stay looking good. for some reason it doesnt like my mov files and it did before but when i converted it to an AVI it really lost a lot of quality.

im not sure ecatly what type it made right now i just finished rendering and it looks pretty good to me but boy they make large files.

I build fly and compete with large radio control planes. the current project is a 25 ft wingspan WWI bomber as was seen in the movie flyboys. when I am out flying I want to video the plane and then pull it into vegas and make it look like an old movie so that it looks like the real thing. if this thing wasnt so large I would post the original and the finished versions and you could see what I am doing. basically I am making a replica of a vintage biplane and editing the looks of the video so that you cannot tell it is a model and so far so good

If you chose DV avi (which is probably the default) then you are looking at 13 GB/hour of footage. Uncompressed or losslessly compressed is much bigger again.

If you want it small enough for the web then consider WMV. Vegas has several good standard templates for this.

thanks yes it coes to around 265 megs. i am learning slowly. I got the editing to where I like it now will try to get the rendering to where I need it. I should have posted this for you to see earlier so that you know what I am working with but http://www.arizonamodels.com/videos/GothaMars.mov but that is the video I am working with and also the plane I am doing in 1/3 scale. it is for an event coming up next week in dayton and my plane project is for the next event which is in 2009. there are other movies here http://www.arizonamodels.com/videos.php but they are in ram format and I havent found a decent converter yet

yes that isnt mine but a non scale test they did as it was used in the movie flyboys. that one is 1/6th scale now imagine the same plane at 1/3 scale ie 26 ft wingspan flying like that with no people in the shot. then take that mov file pull it into vegas use the film effects and basically use the circa 1908 preset but add a little more on the scratcvhes and less on the flicker and jitters and you will see a full scale bomber come alive. thats what I did to that mov file that you saw. hehe you should grab it and try it to see what it comes too everyone is loving it. there is one called dogfight i did that too and it came to 300 megs as a wmv the gotha was shorter came to 21 megs. now if i can add special effects on the dogfight one as it is an in the cockpit view and you see the ends of the guns it will look like he is shooting.
