  1. i just encoded a hd file to mkv using a bitrate of 8500. when i play it back in zoomplayer it gets choppy and jerky at certain scenes. i used both the coreavc and ffdshow filter for the video and neither one works and the cpu stays around 30-44% on playback. looking for any advice on this. another question, i have a radeon 2600 pro that has a gpu for decoding vc1 and h264. should i try converting to another format that my video card will do the decoding for or will this not matter. thanks.

Try KMPlayer. It's free and it allows you to pick the codecs you want to play - having that said, it will take some time to get used tom, but it is very powerful. The coreacv decoder is the fastest software solution out there. What might make a difference is the splitter. You should install Haali media splitter from the tools section and give it another try.

What software did you use to convert your HD material? The reason I ask is because MKV is just a container and there is many different combinations of audio and video codecs possible. Not all of them work well together.

PS: what part of Switzerland are you from?
