What does it do when you try to play one back? Were they recorded on the same machine? Have you tried to adjust the 'tracking'? On some VCRs you can use the channel 'up<>down' buttons during playback to adjust tracking if there is no separate tracking adjustment.

a scrambled screen comes up no picture no audio but i've watched these tapes before on this vcr and they played fine i also tried tapes that weren't recorded using this vcr and they still don't work. and the vcr doesn't come with a tracking button i tried the channel up/down buttons and nothing changed.

I hate to suggest it but maybe they have been erased by being too close to a strong magnet...even without you knowing.
Can you try them on another deck?
Have all the bad ones been stored together? -
i did try playing them in the older vcr and the movies played fine its just this vcr. is there any way of fixing this?
