Telling McAfee to Shut Up

Lately my McAfee has been using its control notification function to offer me annoying new functions for a discount.

Are these popups from a paid-for product even more annoying than the regular ones, or is it just me?

I gotta wonder if they know that its stuff like this that makes people change vendors...

Avgfree - antivirus with a small footprint on memory
Adaware se - keeps other rubbish out where it don't belong

I dumped McAfee long ago.

AVG Free Edition 7.5 works great.

i got rid of all mcafee products even though they were free through comcast. i thought norton was bad until i tried the mcafee crud.

i've been using avg free along with ms defender on one comp now for 3 months. no infections of any kind and they are both free and non-annoying.

Avast v4.7 Home Antivirus for me.
Also SpywareBlaster, Spybot and Ad-Aware.

I had run McAfee for about three years and when I decided to try AVG Free, it found all kinds of backdoor trojans that McAfee never saw and I updated McAfee every week through Compuserve's Virus Central.

Been using AVG for about 4 years now.

I also nominate AVG Free. Been using it for at least a year, maybe two. I lost count. I don't even think about it anymore. Where my parents, who bought a new laptop computer are now in that situation where Norton (which came for free with the laptop) has expired. And they keep getting the message popup that reminds them to pay for another year. Of course if they do this, they will probably discover that they cannot just pay for another year, but they will have to buy the latest version. And onward the cycle goes. They won't listen to me about AVG Free. For some reason, people think "free" means "crap", which is simply not true. In fact, I've found that often, the inverse is true.

I've installed lots of free software on lots of customers machines with them over the years. I find the best combo is AVG Free, Windows DEfender to help protect against spyware, Spybot to search and remove spyware that may slip though (rare in most cases).

I don't even use a 3rd party firewall, instead I use the standard windows firewall and sit behind a router which provides some basic protection simply because you are using NAT with a router.

Finally Firefox.

With that combo 95% of users are safe on the net without a lot of CPU overhead or software that screams at them constantly, and its free.

The other 5% are using such ricky behavior that nothing is going to protect them.



As far as Ad-aware, its a good product but I'd rather scan with spybot its tops.

McAfee has never been good far as I'm concern, AVG Free is Great...
