  1. (Reuters) - Chip maker Intel Corp (INTC.O) said it would buy security technology firm McAfee Inc (MFE.N) for $7.68 billion in an effort to make security technology a strategic focus.

Intel said it would pay $48 per share in cash for McAfee in its biggest acquisition ever. The price is a 60 percent premium to McAfee's Wednesday closing price. McAfee would become a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel's software and services group.

    I don't think it's even worth $7.68 (about 8 bucks).
I moved to freeware years ago -- more reliable, less bloat.

Indeed, R&D would be better expense.
Why is a CPU/hardware company getting in virus software? I don't get it.

Intel could buy a better AV company than McAfee!!!

It was not even really an entire story but they were just showing some wall street stock market info when i saw it.....

For a minute i was like they can't be talking about Intel the chip maker and the McAfee AntiVirus company ??

Security is considered a growth industry, which Intel badly needs as Moore's law is rapidly dying.

    Correct.

Anyway, Intel will have some tons of homework to do. Nowadays, every serious malware is designed for fooling and disabling both Norton and McAfee before doing anything else.

  11. McAfee is a piece of crap, my mate told me he had to pay for the "McAffee removal tool" to remove the dam thing, it didn't register in "add and remove programs" and their was no uninstaller in the programs files.

So pay to install it, and then pay to remove it.

  12. this is weird. I mean, it's okay to buy a company, but 7.8 billion???????? In this day and age, how can they think mcafee is gonna be able to generate that kind of money? This must be a typical case of "when the ask-price is high enough, the buyer thinks there MUST be something to it, otherwise they wouldn't ask so much"

Hey Intel, I got this really nice bridge I can sell ya ......

I can see CPU a/v research, and security being more valued than CPU (due to Moore's law).
    Interesting.
