new to this, have a sony vrdmc3 - using dv in - tried dvd+rw, dvd-r the sony starts to record for about 10 miuntes then stops and the little screen says "failed to record." Sony has been totally not helpful. No support - no return of email -

The first thing to try, is usually different media. Try a brand name disc such as Verbatim. From what I've read the Sony's are very picky about media, some even have issues with Sony brand media.
Aside from that, if it isn't working, return/exchange it if it's new and/or the repair shop if it's under warranty. It's possible it is just faulty.Google is your Friend
