    Hello,
I have been converting files to mpg for some time now and have tried alot of different software but I now use tmpg to encode. My question is this. I am converting a divx to vcd and this paticular divx works fine with the audio without first ripping audio to wav before encoding. But I have found that when i encode in the standard vcd size of 352X240 the video is somewhat fuzzy in full screen mode. So i decided to encode the file at twice the standard size "704X480" and the video now in a test looked great at full screen. I would like to know the effect of screen sizes on the end file size if any and also any thoughts you guys might have on this subject. Thanks in advance, Gforce598 8)

If you use the same bitrate (CBR) the output file size will be the same! However, when using a resolution of 704X480 you have to use something like 4 Mb/s to get it look good, if you encode at standard VCD bitrate the result will surely look worse at 704x480 compared to 320x240.

It is fuzzy at this resolution. In full screen mode? Are you just watching in on your computer? Then why to convert? If you're planning to watch it with your DVD player, then also test it with your player to see how it looks. I also have doubts about how many players will play 704x480 without problems.

  3. I have been using "King Viper's SVCD template" in 720 x 480 res. and it looks and sounds good on my RCA 5240 DVD player.

Lucky you, if it works! King Viper's SVCD template is based on Constant Quality VBR encoding, so the final filesize will depend on the resolution used. How much can you actually fit on a cd with this template?

Anyway, your source DivX resolution is probably less than 720x480, so you will get even better results by reducing the resolution down to 480x480.
