    ffmpegx and Turbo.264

My guess is that it will work with the "decode with quicktime" setting. Has anyone tried it? Its supposed to significantly improve encoding time.

From what I've read on that webpage, it seems like it only converts video using the bundled program.

Come on cracks! I'd buy this thing in a second if it would work with ffmpegx and Handbrake's x264 encodings. It would do wonders for helping my poor 1.5Ghz PowerBook.

It actually works with "quicktime aware" applications such as iMovie. I thought the "use quicktime" setting in ffmpegx would work but I am not sure it will use the turbo.264 extensions in quicktime.

Unfortunately the handbrake guys said it might never work because it uses open source extensions.

It looks like it has a bit more flexibility...

...but with obvious limitations of only working within the prescribed programs. Has anyone tried the product and compared it with ffmpegx?

  7. Yes. I have the turbo.264. It is really pretty fast. I have a 2.16Ghz MBP and I see almost double the encoding speeds. I've had it encoding at 60+ fps before. any app that has the quicktime export options will work with it. I've tried it with imovie, compressor, and eyeTV. But I hardly use it at all anymore for a couple of reasons. The settings are very limited. it only comes with 3 presets, ipod, ipod large, appleTV, with NO advanced settings. there is no way that I've found to be able to tweek the settings even a little bit. The other big down-side to the turbo is that the video quality isn't that great. Colors seem slightly washed out and in darker scenes it has a greenish tint that seems to flicker on and off. very annoying. I'm not sure what avc codec it is using, but the results are no where near the quality of encoders like ffmpegx and visualhub which use the x264 codec. it could be that the settings just need to be tweaked and optimized. hopefully a firmware update will fix this soon. I probably wont be using it until there is another update to the software or the firmware.

  8. That's a good report ammonkc.

It sounds like ffmpegx is still on top with regard to quality and flexibility. I need more options with my "aging" G4 and G5's
