I've recently d/l a few Divx movies that claimed to have english subtitles. After burning them, they didn't have subtitles at all! I noticed within each movies' download directory that there was a .SRT file. Is this the subtitle file? If so, how do I burn it properly so that the subs work?

Also, I have another Divx movie with .SUB and .IDX files. I'm assuming one of those are the subs. The thing is, the .SUB file is 18mb big while the .IDX file is 230kb. What can I do with this Divx movie to make it work with subs? Do all Divx capable DVD players support subtitles?

    Thanks

Divx and Xvid videos usually have the subtitles separate in the same folder as the movie and named the same, like movie.avi and movie.srt. Most set top players and software players can use .srt subs if the player is set up for them. If you have different subtitles, you can change them to .srt with a program like Subtitle Workshop. Or the type subs you have may work fine with your player. You would have to check the player manual.

Another type of subtitles are burned into the video. But as they are permanent, not as useful as separate subs.

And this thread would be better in our Subtitle forum. Check the 'Stickies' at the top of that forum for some quick info about subs. Moving you.

    Thanks for your help!

When I burn these Divx movies, Do I burn the whole directory (.avi & .srt in the same dir) or can I burn all the files on the root dir of the DVD+R? Keep in mind that I usually burn 5 movies per DVD+R.

  4. Create a data dvd. Put all your files on it. no need for a directory.

SUB/IDX files almost never work on standalone DVD players that support Divx. The reason is that these are actually bit mapped files (pictures essentially) and standalone players usually need text subtitle files. You can convert SUB format to SRT using a variety of tools. Usually it involves some OCR work and it's a bit time consuming, but you can do it. SUB/IDX files are included because these are bitmap subtitle rips from the DVD itself and they can be very useful to people who want to convert the Divx file back to DVD, but not so helpful to people who want to watch the file in Divx format without conversion.
