I have a computer and I would like to set it up to share with my younger brother. So I created a Limited Account for him to use (with limit, he can surf and all but cannot install programs/software) and all is good. However, it can only connect to the internet when I go into the Administrator account and turn on the Internet. I have a Wireless PCI Card linksys. So my question is how can I turn on the internet without going into the Administrator Account?

Sorry if I can't explain myself clearly. Please help me.

  2. I'm not clear on what you're saying -- does the network card itself show up as not working when he logs in? That is, if you click on the Network Neighborhood icon, does it say (when logged in as Limited User) that the network is disabled or not available? Or is it just that you get a message saying the user has insufficent rights to launch IE?

Well, in any case, I'd try a fairly simple fix -- as yourself (Admin), log in to the computer and go the the Users control in the System properties, and give your brother Admin access. BUT DON'T LET HIM LOG IN, you just log out and log back in to his account yourself.

Now that the account has admin access, try to connect to the internet. I'm guessing that a wizard will launch and walk you through the connection process, and sometimes (depending on your initial configuration) you have to do this on an "admin" level.

Once you connect to the internet, log out and log back in as yourself, and set your brother's account back to Limited Access. Then log back in as him and see if things still work. I'll bet they do.

But if they don't, let us know the error message(s) you get and we'll figure it out!

    Thanks for aswering me.

I have done what you have said like give my bro the admin access then set it to an Limited ...the thing is it only works when I log off (switch users) but once I shut off the computer and turn it back on his limited account cannot access the internet (the network is not available) ...

oh, and there's no wizard that pop up, am I doing something wrong? And there's no error message that pop up. But somehow it's not working. This is so frustrating.

Internet should be on as soon as you boot up, not require you to "turn it on". As only an admin can do that. (Unless you have a time-limited account or some other reason to stay offline.)

I'd have to dig around to find where this is set, but it should be the default.

Have a look at the preferences and options of your connection (while in admin mode).

What I mean by "Turn it on" is that my internet doesn't connect by default. I have to go into Wireless Network Connection Propertie>choose Configure>Advanced>choose shared and WEB> connect ...

That's the problem. Fix that and the limited accounts will work too. I don't know how you got to this stage though, the wifi connection normally grabs whatever is available unless you've restricted it somehow.

WiFi connectivity is usually established at logon. So for instance, when you logon as admin, it connects and is functional. When you logoff, it disconnects.

So the problem would seem to be that your "limited" account does not know or is not setup to logon to the WiFi network.

I've never setup or used limited accounts, so I don't know how to fix your issue. But it was my understanding that when you create limited accounts you have to setup what can't be used. So possilbly something you disabled has affected the internet. Maybe try creating a new "limited" account without disabling anything and see if that works first, before disabling components.

Most wireless cards that use a connection program have a problem where their connection program doesn't work for limited accounts.

Check for an update to the program or if you k now who makes the chipset for the card try to use their generic program if they offer it. However I'd first use windows control the card if you are using XP, that may skirt the problem.
