You get 10 GB of bandwidth for downloads - and depending on the ISP, uploads as well. After you have used your 10GB, one of several things may happen

    1. You role onto a per MB charge at very high rates and get billed a small fortune at the end of the billing period

    2. You get throttled back to dial speeds until the end of the billing period

    3. You get cut off until the end of the billing period.

You would have to read the fine print to find out if

    a. Your 10GB is for downloads only, or includes uploads as well (good ISPs don't include uploads)

    and

    b) What the penalty is for exceeding the plan's allowance for the billing period.

By way of example, I get 25 GB of downloads per month peak (9 am - 4 am) and another 25 GB of downloads per month off-peak (4 am - 9 am) at ADSL 1.5 mbps speeds. If I exceed the download allowance for either pak or off-peak in a billing cycle, that time frame gets throttled back to 64 kbps until the end of the billing cycle.

You may also find that some traffic is speed restricted at the back end. Many budget carriers restrict the speed of certain traffic - p2p/torrent type traffic is very common - in order to keep costs down. A 10 GB plan is pretty small, so it could well fall into this type. Again, read the small print.

I have been an AOL customer for about 5 years, I got a leaflet letting me upgrade to 8mbps with a free wireless router, thats it, thats what was on the leaflet and when I phoned the guy up, he said only the speed will change, few days later I recieve a letter say my monthly usage will be changed to 10GB from the previous unlimited usage, am I correct in argueing this to AOL? and yes I read all the small print.

Is 10GB enough for online gaming?

You could just try switching back. If your only concern is online gaming, then increased download speed is of no benefit. Your biggest concerning is response time on your network (which is unrelated to throughput/speed), and to a lesser extent, upload speed. Download speed (3, 5, 8, 20, or whatever MB download) will all provide the same gaming experience.

if I unplug and replug my router, will that restart my monthly usage?

  10. No, it wont. Your usage is calculate from start of billing period to end. For example: my billing date for my ISP is the 14th of every month. so, each bill I get is billed from the 14th - the 13th of the following month. Nothing you can do will reset it.

usage is tracked at the isp not locally on your equipment, so no not a chance.
