  2. The RCA outputs on your DVD player are what they call "line level," meaning you'll have to amplify the audio signal before you can use headphones to hear it.

But any amplifier that has line-level inputs could take that signal (from the DVD player) and pipe it to your headphones, and I know I've seen $20 "sound boosters" at your local electronics store. These are basically little battery powered amplifiers that amplify ambient sound (via built-in microphone) and I'll bet that they also have a "line in" plug (1/8") that would allow you to plug an RCA to 1/8" stereo adapter cable from your DVD player, to the amp, then plug your headphones into that and voila, cheap sound.

Or go to Goodwill and pick up a cheap amp or boombox with RCA inputs and a headphone jack and try that. And don't trip over the 30 foot cable you end up with! :P

Another alternative option similar to ozymango is to use a spare pair of computer speakers that have a headphone jack on them. Then simply use the ysplitter for rca to headphone adapter and connect it to the speakers. Then you can hook the headphones to the headphone jack on the speakers. I do this with my spare dvd player I use in my workout room. It's important though for quality purposes to use amplified speakers. They don't have to be beefy super powerful ones. Any that require a plug in for power should be enough to give you adequate volume adjustment for different types of shows.

  4. Most converters are for headphone to line level so you need a mixer board:

  5. I find you often can use just an RCA to stereo pin plug adaptor for headphones but you'll have no control over the volume (aside from whatever might be in the device). So depending on the headphones the volume may be too loud or too soft.

Thanks a lot everyone for the good info, but I found my solution. I decided to get wireless headphones from a local radio shack that can hook into almost any audio source! they're working great with my dvd player!
    Thanks again! : )
