I've got a library of files (mostly AVI) that I want to make sure I can watch on my Philips DVP 642/37. The manual says that the player will read lots of different formats. DVD, SVCD, VCD, MPEG4 and Divix 3.11, 4.x and 5.

So the job is like this: Take every file in the directory and make 5-10 second sample of it. Then put the samples on a disc and put that into my player. If the track fails I know I have some conversion to do to the file before I burn that track to DVD.

Am I going about this the wrong way? Is there an easier way? How would you automate?

Hit me up on yahoo if you can. I'm usually online but not visible. ct98102. Thanks.

It is impolite to come to a forum like this, then expect people to PM you with solutions. It kind of defeats the purpose, as others won't learn from your experiences.

The simplest solution is to load the avi file into mpeg4modifier. If it won't load, it probably wont play. Next, use mpeg4modifer to check that it has not been encoded with qpel and gmc. Some players will play avi files encoded like this (my LG will play files with GMC to 2 warp points) but many wont.

Anything that passes can be played. Almost anything that doesn't can be run through AVIRecomp to make it playable.

You can also use G-spot to check the files, but mpeg4modifier does show a little more detail in some areas.

My bad, didn't realize I'd automatically get an email informing me of your response. I withdraw the request. Thanks for the help re mpeg4modifier. I'll give that a try.

use Toast Titanium 7 or 8,
load the avi files into the
Video Tab of the main window.
    Select DIVX disc.
    Insert Blank, click burn.

if Toast has issues with the avi files,
first, quit your version of Toast,
then you need to go and download
Perian 1.0, install it, and then launch
    Toast, and try it again.
