I purchased the plextor convertx pvr px-tv100u. Its a video capture device via usb. My system is Pentium D 3.2ghz with 2gb ram and asus motherboard and radeon sapphire video card. I have xpsp1 installed. I installed the device drivers and it recognzed the tv tuner card and I installed ulead video studio and windows media classic and sagetv. All 3 crashed the moment I attempted to capture. A total reboot. I have tried the device on another computer and it works. Tech support on plextor says they have no idea. Any ideas or suggestions. I like to avoid sp2 as I have had headaches and limitations with it on other systems.

Does the other computer that it worked on have SP2? Just wondering. SP2 shouldn't cause any problems. At least it hasn't with me with probably 30 installs.

But I don't think SP2 is really the problem unless there is one certain modification it makes that fixes the problems . Those programs should run fine even without SP1 or 2, though.

Since you mention USB, I would unplug all other USB devices and see if that helps any.

Do you get any info from Windows after the reboot? And what does the computer do? Just shut off or lock up or just spontaneously reboot? The last points more toward RAM or system problems. You could run Memtest 86 on your RAM. http://www.memtest86.com/

Another possibility is a driver conflict. What other programs do you have that might cause this? You could try msconfig (Type that in a 'Run...' window.) With that program you can selectively shut down some drivers and programs and see if that helps. The effect is not permanent.

I have done many hundreds of SP2 installs and never had a problem that wasn't related to the dismal state of the PC before the install.
