I am using a tool to "capture" or transmitting DV from camcorder to XP. I like to use the tool because it can recover lost frames during transmission. But it has one problem: it requires me to divide the transmission into AVI files in the size of 2,048MB. No way around that. I am not sure whether it is because AVI files can not go beyond the size. I have NTFS for hard disk. But the software does not care about that. It just requires it. So, I guessed whether it was AVI limit.

This caused me a lot of headache in making menus when authoring DVD by Nero 6. Nero 6 automatically makes each episode (each AVI file) added to the project as a menu entry in main menu. This is annoying since the 2nd episode is nothing but continuation of the first one. Because the division of AVI stream was automatic, it just cut any where when first file reaches the size limit. It is not the right place for a new menu entry for it.

Nero 6 does not allow me to dismiss the menu entry for the 2nd episode. I would like them to be one episode and all chapters in the two episodes will also be in the same submenu for the first one. But I could not make it. So, I thought I had to join the two AVI files (or even more) into one.

The 2,048MB is not a limit for AVI file, right? What tool can I use for joining them? I would like it to be a simple process without encoding since it might be very time consuming. Will joined file have problem in making DVD later or data loss from joining?

I would start using better tools for transferring your video, however if your computer specs are right, you may be pretty much screwed from the start.

Both virtualdub and avi demux have append modes that will let you join videos without the need to re-encode. both have worked for me, however I know that both have produced audio sync problems after the join for others.

The best option is to join in an editor like Vegas or premiere (or probably even Ulead. If you keep the video as DV, there should be no re-encoding.

While I have very little respect for Nero's video abilities, even Nero should not have problems with the joined files. If there are problems, they will be evident in the avi files after joining.
