    Hello
I recently bought a HP DVD940e external burner to dump my videos to. Since my computer only had USB1.1 i also bought a PCI card with USB2.0.
I dropped some video files onto a data DVD+RW and now when i watch them the video plays for a few seconds, then freezes(but continues playing time-wise), then plays again and so on.

    1. is the normal?
    2. could it be due to the controller card or blank media?

    any help is appreciated, thanks.

Media ... depends on brand you used ... verbatim or tys
And when you say "files" ... what where they exactly ... video format wise ... avi , vobs , mpegs ...

But the advice would be to rip the drive out of the external usb enclosure , and install it into the pc instead ... less issues

What's the chipset of the controller card? Not all controller cards will work with optical drives. If the controller card has the promise chipset the drive will not work correctly. Promise chipset controller cards are used for only hard drives. The ite8212 chipset controller cards work well with optical drives.

Are you using Nero to burn your avi files? Try using CdBurnerXP to burn your video files. Nero is buggy. MAXELL dvd media is crappy since they now use RITEK to manufacture their dvd media. Use VERBATIM or TAIYO YUDEN.

Maxwell could be the main problem .

Where is this card exactly installed ?

Take a look at motherboard .

Note slots in order and whats in them from top to bottom ... ie

    1: agp - used
    2: Pci1 - n/a
    3: Pci2 - n/a
    4: Pci3 - usb card

    5: Pci4 - n/a
    6: Pci5 - used , define type as modem / capture / sound / ect

Control cards have a tendency to want to be in a particular slot in order not to be the cause of problems .
Cards also need to be installed in a correct manner so as not to cause conflicts (shared resources) .

Via units ... same here , but for external storage other than for use with burner .

Depending on the chipset of the controller card will determine whether or not the optical drive will work or not. I've had experience using a promise chipset controller card which caused the dvd burner not to work correctly. Using a silicon 680 chipset was so so but using a ite8212 chipset controller card the dvd burners work well. I have 2 ite8212 controller cards that I use with my many flavors of dvd burners that I have. No problems at all with burning.
