    Hi guys

I downloaded three avi files, but WMP doesn't want to play them(need another codec etc or the ones that compressed them aren't installed?), nor can the files be burned. It seems that they aren't being 'read'?

I have tried converting them with Super, downloading various supposedly 'all-in-one' codec patches/add-ons but nothing happens. I've tried analysing with G-spot but it doesn't read them.

Will I have to delete these hard-to-find documentaries and simply look to buy them?

    Thanks.

Codec packs are likely to bring you little but misery, and in the long run make playback of all your videos troublesome. Stay away from them would be my advice.

There are other info tools, such as mediainfo, avi2clipboard etc (in fact, Baldrick has 21 of them listed here : https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/codec-video-identifiers)

But if g-spot won't open, as well as all the other problems you are having, I would suspect they are in fact fubar'd files, suitable only for deleting.

    Cheers Gunslinger,

I'll delete the codec pack then, didn't realise they were such hassle. I presume the avi's are sh** then and should be scrapped.

    Thanks for the links.

Before you delete them there are a couple more things to try.

VLC (VideoLan Client) is a player that carries it's own codec based for playback. It covers all the common and many uncommon formats. Try playing them back with this. If VLC won't play them then they probably aren't salvageable.

The last few possibilities are virtualdub, avimux gui and AVI Demux. If any of them will load the videos they should be able to output something useful for you.
