I am using Nero 6 Vision Express 3 to author DVD-Video. I moved to different part of the video through preview window and created chapters. But it did not give me any ways to well define or label the chapters. Also, when I tried to author it, it got me into the window for making menu. Those chapters did not show up in the menu editing window either. I dont have chance to put those chapters into the menu.

This is my first time authoring DVD. So, I am not so clear on what I can do and what I can not. So, if I want to make certain spot of the video as one menu item so that viewer can chose it from the menu and jump directly to the section, is chapter the way to make it happen?

Right now, Nero 6 only allows me to make each video episode as one menu item since it automatically loads each one into the the menu editing window. It does not allow me to make one spot in an episode to be one menu item. Is it something I did wrong? Or, chapters can not be menu items. They can only be "invisible" spots and viewers can only do "Next" to move through them.

If I have to break a whole video into episodes (each in a separate DV file) during DV transmission, it is kind of annoying. So, any hints?

  2. Start a project, add files one at a time. Click create chapter button after each file you add and set your chapter points, click next and add another file...

Now you're done adding files and creating chapters and you're back on the "content" page, click next to go to the "select menu" page. At the left on the page you have the "select a menu" box, NVE will create a menu page for each file you added previously and a main menu page to give you access to them. At the right of the page is the "menus to use" box, there you can select no menu, see the main menu only or see the main menu and the chapters submenus.

With more than one file in the movie clicking the "select a menu" box shows an entry for the main menu and each of the files of the movie. When "title and chapters menu" is selected in the "menus to use" box, each entry will show a different menu. The submenu referring to a file will show the file's chapter points. If there is only one file in the movie NVE will only show the chapters menu.

If you selected "title menu" only in the "menus to use" box and only have one file in the movie, NVE wil only show the main menu and not the chapters menu (your case?). The workaround would be to edit your big file, that would take a few more steps, but wouldn't be more time consuming than setting chapter marks.

Add your video file to the project, then double click it. Grab the left arrow on the progress bar of the preview box and slide it to the start of a clip. You can fine tune the position by typing a value in the time code display next to the progress bar (or use the arrows or the wheel on your mouse; precise to .03 sec). Do the same for the end of the clip and click next, then click create chapters. For the next clip, re-insert the same video file on the "content" page and repeat the process... You can't just drop the video onto the storyboard/timeline of the "edit" page.

When creating and editing the menus, I've found NVE's animated menus to be less than smooth, so I would say not to use animation in the menu.

Thanks for the hints and detail steps.

Following your instructions exactly, I was able to see chapters showing up in submenus.

Then I have another question which was also part of what I liked to achieve. In the way suggested, chapters created in the middle of one episode of video will show up in the submenu for the episode. The whole episode will have one entry in the main menu. Is there any way I can promote some of the chapters in the episode into the main menu. Basically some of the chapters should be at the same level of episode entries in the main menu.

Or, to achieve that, will I have to make them into different episode files at these chapter points?
