    Hi -

I went to a site with streaming media and looked in my temp folder for the actual video file. Found it! It was a 20 meg .dat file, which I have not been able to play back. However from the pathname to that file I know that what I was watching in my browser when at the actual web page was really a .wmv file. I am virtually positive that the .wmv file is buried somehow inside that .dat file. I have tried renaming it to .wmv but that doesn't work.

The reason I believe this is that the pathname to the file looked something like this:

    www/MusicVideoWebPage.com/subfolder/FavoriteVideo.wmv?/otherFolders/FavoriteVideo.dat

So, how the heck can I somehow open the .dat file and look inside it and extract out that .wmv file?

    Thanks!

Try GSpot, it may be able to tell you what it is.

Otherwise, if you open the file with Notepad, you may see some interesting text that gives you a clue, though most of the file will look like garbage in that.

I found the answer to my own question.

The program WM Recorder works like a charm! It stores all the files int he correct video format in a folder called "Recordings" in its folder under Program Files.
