  1. I use a registered version of Nero Vision Express. I have had it for about 3 years but only recently started using it. I never had a DVD burner and I recorded everything in VCD fromat which my MINTEK-1600 DVD player had no problems playing. Well recently I got a new computer that has a good dvd burner in it and the MINTEK started going out. So I thought it was about time to buy a new player anyway.

I started using Nero to make DVD format disc. It does not have all the features I want but since I already had it why not. The only problem is that the audio on any burned to disc videos is so to low. I turn up my desktop speakers to mid volume level and can barely hear the actors. On my laptop no matter what I do when playing a disc all I hear are mumbles. I know it has to be Nero becasue if I play the same un burned mpg or avi file on both my desktop and laptop with the same settings. I get full volume.

Given that. Can anyone reccommend a Free DVD muxer, demuxer, authoring, burning program that will allow me to adjust the sound before burning. I really do not want to have to buy another program. I tired ConvertXtoDVD that's fine except for the big logo they put in the middle of your video in the unregisteed version. I could deal with a small logo on the corner like Divx but a major logo as big as the screen before I could even test it out on one video turned me off. I now have DVD lab, but before I try it and waste my 30 day trial period I was reading the a few guides that I found on the net and none of them mentioned audio adjustments. I also have the free dvdstyler program but again reading the manual I see nothing on how to adjust the volume before burning.

    Any help?

  2. NVE has the clip volume preset to 33% by default, it's stupid and you have to remember to raise it to 100%. After your import a clip on the storyboard, right click it and select properties.

Using the Nero Wave Editor, you can do more advanced things with your sound like modifying the dynamic range, normalizing, changing the pitch...

Start by demuxing the audio from the clip. I like to use DVD2AVI, it can convert the sample rate, change the dynamic range... You end up with a WAV.

Once done with your editing, in NVE switch to timeline mode and import the new wav. Set the volume level on the video clip to 0% and the audio clip to 100%.

The only thing you can't do is change the duration of the audio you're editing. So to cut out words you would just lower the volume at that point.

Also, make sure to set NVE for Dolby audio encoding, LPCM just eats too much space.

OK you said a lot there. Is "Nero Wave Editor" something that comes with NVE or is it a seperate purchase or download. If I can "raise it up to 100%" why would I have to "Start by demuxing the audio from the clip". If I can raise the volume with NVE why would I have to use DVD2AVI,it can convert the sample rate change the dynamic range..."

  4. The Wave Editor comes with Nero Burning, look through the start menu or expand the left edge of Nero's SmartStart menu.

You only have to use the Wave Editor and DVD2AVI (to demux the audio from the clip), if you want to do more advanced editing of the audio.

  5. Nick I found the storyboard and the properties pop up. I rasied it to 150% I hope that does not casue distortion. I am going to try it on a project I already have made and burned with a dvd-rw just in case that does not correct it.

I appreciate the other tips. I am not doing any advanced audio editing right now. Just want to get SOME sound. I may switch over to DVD Styler or DVD-Labs to do more authoring(interactive menus that can jump to sub-menus and chapter that jump to other chapters depending on what menu you chose them under). But for right now I just want some sound greater then a mumble. I will let you know what happens with that burn tonight.

This post will explain what I eventually want to do as far as authoring and menus.
