  1. Most vts_video_TS files are small less than 2 mb. on 2 newer tv series dvd's I have noticed that
the vts_video_TS is black screen , vob plays but just black picture, on one is was 88 mb, the other was 700 mb. I opened 88 MB with word and it was 807 pages.
On trying to backup these dvd's, I would run out of memory which never happened before, just on these, one of which was lost S-2, I increased my pagefile capability and did copy one dvd, but it took twice as long as usual, and at times seemed to stop.
I was using anydvd and dvd shrink.
I also tried dvd decrypter, and it said too many page headers errors, which I think was the 807 pages. so what is this type protection called, and what is best for eliminating what I call the "black vob"
I am going to try some of the programs suggested here and see how it goes, but any info appreciatec. I will check back if any want more info from me to answer.

  2. the correct file name is
VIDEO_TS.VOB this may or may not be what uses up all the memory.

Probably decryption procedure failed with a newer encrypt code, try latest version of DVDFabDecrypter.

P.S. VIDEO_TS.VOB is the top menu file. It may contain no video but in this case it would have small size.

  4. ...and what is best for eliminating what I call the "black vob"

I use VobBlanker. I've seen these damned things up to 500 MB or so. As near as I can tell, they're put there so people that don't know any better leave them alone, as they're in the menus, and it'll make your backup of the movie itself look much worse, since so much of the space is taken up with the black menus.

Open the DVD in VobBlanker, highlight the VIDEO_TS containing these things and hit "Menu" over on the right side. Highlight it again in the new screen, they'll open in the lower screen, highlight each large-sized PGC making up the VTS, hit "Cells", highlight it again in the new screen, "Preview" it to make sure it's the one you want, and "Blank". Check the other big PGCs the same way. When all done, make your way out to the main screen and "Process". While you're in the program, you might also want to blank out the warnings, logos, and any extras or previews you don't want.

I think they're unreferenced, so you can probably also get rid of them using RipIt4Me during the decryption stage, or FixVTS or PGCEdit by themselves. But I use VobBlanker.

  5. ok thanks "manono" your answer told me what I needed to know. I was fairly sure the video_TS vob was the problem, but wanted to be sure I DL most of programs you said, and will learn how to use them. Thanks for detailed answer.

  6. so to any who read this, if it lakes longer than normal to copy dvd or you run out of memory,
check the video_TS vob if it is bigger than 2 mb then that may well be the culprit.
on lost S-2 dvd's it was 88 MB and caused problems, on Desperate housewives S-2 it was 700 mb!! which ran me out of memory and I neve rconsidered that it would also affect picture quality, although i noticed that 700 mb was cut to 300 mb file.
I had never seen this before so it is relatively new.
