Hi, I have an ASF file 1GB in size and about 4 hours long. How can I make the file a lot smaller? Hopefully around 1MB... either this or can I cut the video into shorter segments and make each of these segments around 1MB? Thanks in advance.

Either cut it into pieces or re-encode it to a lower bitrate or to a different format. What kind of ASF? Have you tried Windows Movie Maker or Windows Media Encoder?

BTW, 1GB is 1000MBs so you will have a lot of pieces.

Hi, thanks for the info. I was able to cut the file into 1 hour segments and under 100MB each with good enough quality. For anyone else who might need to do the same thing, here is how I did it:

I used Asfbin to cut the file into smaller segements. The program does this really easy and quick. Then I downloaded Windows Media Encoder as per redwudz suggestion. I used the 'convert file' selection and turned the asf file into a wmv file. It gives you options to change the quality when converting - I used high quality and VHS quality to compare the differences. VHS quality came out really crappy, but the files were a lot smaller than they were origionally. I just stuck with high quality since the files were smaller, but still good viewing quality.

If you need the files smaller, you can use the 'convert file' option again as many times as you want until the file is small enough, but the quality will get worse each time. Worked good enough for me to upload videos. Cheers.
