problem with video card ?

Gday to all

The problem i have is happening more and more often ,
screen will go black then come back on and all the colours and grafix are then all screwed up
and on occasion the whole system will shut down and restart. mostly when you are using it but sometimes when its just on, then again I'ive been on now for over 1hr and it has not happened.


what iv done to try and fix it is
installed a new HDD and reinstalled the OS win xp pro
made sure the refresh rate is correct for the moniter.
i dont think its the monitor as i have another pc hooked up to it and it works fine

any ideas

im thinking video card but hard to check without a replacement
the card is NVIDIA GEforce4 MX 440-se

the rest of the unit is
P4 1.7
160gb HDD
Gigabyte P4 titain 667 mother board
768 ram
winxp pro SP2

yes its an old bus but it just keeps on truckin
used mostly for internet and email
and some old games not many

Have you downloaded the latest drivers fron nvidia site .... yes its an old graphics card but the drivers are still updated (i have a pc with the same card in) ... also try opening the pc and removing the card and then reinsert it as there could be a bad connection with the agp slot (seen this so many times and just removing the card and reinserting it usualy does the trick) ... also make sure there are no cables running close to the card ... i noticed that my mx 440 did funky things when one of my ide cables was very close to it.

If it still has a problem after trying all the above then its probably a faulty card ... get a new one
