is it possible to use downloaded subtitles with dvds that i play on my computer? if so, how can i go about this?

If you use Media Player Classic, try opening the DVD, then on the file menu "Load subtitles" and select your subtitle file (probably an SRT).
However, you often have to resync subs. If so, try Subtitle Workshop. -

I've found KMPlayer to be the best and easiest for the purpose.
New versions of Nero Showtime display external subtitles with DVDs, as well.
PowerDVD also claims to support external subs.
