i learned from this forum that the reason i'm getting audio dropouts when i use mpeg streamclip to demux discs burned on my hdd/dvd recorder is because panasonic use a faulty aac encoder. i'm not able to remedy this problem because there's no software available for mac users that can fix the dropouts. (as far as i know.)
so i'm thinking of getting a new machine to replace my panasonic dmr ex85. i would like at least a 160GB drive, and the ability to burn both PAL and NTSC discs (but not necessarily convert between standards). i am really keen on the quality of dvd encoding.
i would really appreciate any recommendations that board members might have ...
thanks,
mark

You might want to take a look at this thread:

I'm not sure exactly which models might be available in the UK, or what they cost, but the list of models available in Canada, Europe, and Asia is encouraging, and I know this has been one of the best product lines. When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form. -
thanks - i had already looked at that thread.
is pioneer generally a more reliable manufacturer ?
does anyone have experience of using a pioneer dvd recorder and demuxing on a mac in the way i have described ?
any advice much appreciated.

I am not familiar with mac's but on a pc that error happens with that software with every brand of recorder tested.

so does a timecode break always mean there will ultimately be a sound dropout ?
i have used mpeg streamclip to demux vob's that i have downloaded or been sent, and not noticed any problems.

I did not test further since the software was already indicating errors that no other software I own showed. I have tested and used the Panasonic ES10, ES30V, ES35V, ES37VK, EH55 and have never seen any audio drop out. I have also tested LG's, Pioneers, JVC's and never experienced any drop outs with those either yet they all show a time code error with this software.
Have you done this test with a recording from any other brand of dvd recorder with this software ( not downloaded ) or do you experience dropouts before you attempt to use this software?
[edit]I did test this software with some video that did not come from a recorder and it did not show the time code error. The error only occurred with video from recorders. -
at the moment, i am finding that panasonic dmr-rx85 discs demuxed with mac the ripper seem to be fine and do not have the dropouts i was hearing before.
