OK as of lately my DVD burner/drive doesnt like to read discs anymore. It might read 1 out of 5. Most of these DVDs are data discs and some were burned on my brothers computer and soem on mine. Now the dvds that the drive wont read, use to read them and i had gotten stuff off of them before. WHat would make this happen to stop it from reading disc.
I have a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-1635S.
anY INFO WOULD BE GREAT..
ThanX

You might be lucky - it could just be dust on the lens - in which case a cleaning CD would sort your problem.
More likely (IMHO) is a dead or dying laser in which case your only course of action is to place the drive in the refuse recepticle and replace the drive with a new one.
Try cleaning the lens first but I'm not hopeful - Sorry -
Something that might help, but won't hurt. Uninstall the channel the drive is on and let Windows reinstall it when rebooting. You can do this in 'Device Manager'. That will reset Windows settings for the drive. It's workth a try. Thanks for the idea, MysticE,

You may also want to verify the discs are still good in another drive. It's possible they were poorly burned or they are just cheap/generic media that has failed. Until you know for sure the discs work in another drive, I wouldn't spend a lot of time troubleshooting.
I have/had many data discs recorded on Memorex media from my first burner (Lite-On), many of those discs are now no longer able to be read or only partially readable. I have others discs recorded during the same period on TY media, that are still fully functional.Google is your Friend -
Ok these discs did work in my comp previously. i got something off it, then i went to go back and get other stuff a couple weeks later and it wont read. It acts like the disc is empty.
ALso on it dying. i can still use my convertX to burn dvds and they burn fine.
but i did try and burn a music cd the other day and it messed up. ANd that never happens!
im gonna try what you guys said.

double click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers then uninstall the channel that your drive is on. then reboot your pc. LITEON dvd burners are usually in DMA 4 MODE so the one that shows in UDMA 4 MODE is likely your dvd burner.
