I was wondering if the pc version of the nes/snes controller adapters would work on the nintendo wii. I've seen retroports is coming out with an adapter for both that will plug into the gamecube ports on the wii. However I was wondering if the already available usb adapters that hook up old nintendo controllers to the pc would also work on the nintendo wii. Does anyone have any hard evidence of the compatibility?

I'd just love to hook up my snes controller to play all of the old virtual console games.

I've been reading online about the upcoming retroports but I haven't seen any user reviews for existing usb adapters on the wii yet. Any links or info would be appreciated (I'd be less anxious if they actually had a release date for the adapters - the website just says January 2007 for the NES adapters and Q1 2007 for the SNES adapters - could they be any more vague then that??? )

EDIT - Ok on a whim I tried my usb logitech controller on the wii usb port. No go for the classic games - zelda 1 woudln't work and it wouldn't even load up fzero (snes).

I'm trying to search for a list of confirmed devices that work on the usb port.

The drivers have to work on the unit. I tried a logitech gaming pad through usb and no go. So I'm thinking the usb adapters for the old controllers won't work either.

I think I just may bite the bullet and get the classic controller. I'll wait for the port adapters later.

@ Rottenfoxbreath - yeah for the most part gamecube controllers are ok its just the offset for the x and y buttons are kinda rough for snes games. not that you really use those buttons much but asthetically they should be parallel to each other like the snes controller.

why not use the Nintendo Wii Classic Controller?

I saw them at Target yesterday and they look like the shiznit (though nothing can compare to my ASCII pad for SNES -- why did they ever stop making controllers?!?!).
very similar to the SNES pad in size and lay out, but with added goodies.
and about a billion times better than the N64's torture device of a controller that nobody over the age of 7 could properly fit in their hand anyway (hello Nintendo, some of us come in adult sizes!!!)

I was doing quite a bit of shopping yesterday (looking for a new DVD player) and I drove all over the damned place. Went to all the 'major' electronics stores as well as several Target locations.
Target was the only place(s) that had any of those controllers. Good luck!

Thanks. I'm gonna call ebgames. They may have some. I bought an extra wii remote there after Christmas. They may have some controllers in stock. Otherwise I just may buy on amazon or something.

I checked my Target Friday and they didn't have any. I checked circuit city online and the three nearest stores are out of stock. Walmart online is out of stock and didn't have a store locator option. I'm gonna try compusa's website again but I don't think they have the controller

Well I finally bit the bullet and jumped on ebay. I bought one for 20.00 plus shipping with buy-it-now auction. Hopefully it will be here by Saturday assuming it ships tomorrow. However I wouldn't be suprised if I don't get it until next week.

I checked out retroports again and they had said jan 07 for the nes adapter and 1st quarter 07 for the snes adapter. Now it says q1 07 for both of them! I don't know if they'll ever get released. I decided I finally wanted to get a classic controller and all those damn ebayers ate up the market and I had to succumb to ebay to get one! Oh well this should make it more enjoyable to play the virtual console games

    I GOT IT!

I really like it. Definitely better than using a gamecube controller. It is a little odd having the cord coming out of the bottom instead of the top. But not too bad.

The footprint is nearly identical to the SNES controller. It's a little thicker than the snes but overall a faithful imitation. I have two complaints - minor - The left and right trigger buttons on the top of the controller are more springy then the snes. They're sort of mini versions of gamecube trigger buttons - you know more depression to get them to engage then the old snes soft touch triggers. And the other complaint - the buttons are both somooth rounded over buttons - wheras the original snes had two buttons with depressed recesses like the original NES controller and two rounded over buttons. Now it is really a minor complaint but that instant contact feel is lost from the ab/xy combo. Now you still easily know where they are without looking but the touch response of the original was fantastic.

Anyway - those minor complaints apart this is a really first class controller - and its white to match the WII. Also its weird - its wireless but its got a cord! Thats because the cord goes to the wii remote and attaches just like the nunchuck. So you don't need batteries for the classic controller. That is a great feature

I think I will still buy the snes adapter port for the wii when they come out. There is nothing like the original and I still have mine. Though I don't know if I can go back to a nonwireless control pad!

FYI Legend of Zelda A LINK TO THE PAST is now available for download on the VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!!!! I bought it last night and its perfect! With the classic controller its just like playing it on the snes though I don't have the cartridge anymore. This has been great I just wish they'd quit this piecemeal stuff and finally put the full nes and snes catalog up for download.

is there somewhere I can go to find a list of every game that is available for the virtual console?
I ain't found jack on the Nintendo site (it's kind of crappy to navigate) and I'm considering trading in a GameCube, NES, SNES, N64, & TurboGrafx-16 towards a Wii, but not if I can't get all the games I have for those consoles via the Virtual Console.

There is. You have to go the wii tab and select available games. It has a listing of all games and which system they are. I believe it shows the ones on vc by stating "virtual console".

The NES retroport adapter is out now!!!!!

Since I do have a classic controller I am not going to spend twenty bucks on an nes adapter - unless they finally release TMNT 2 the arcade game on virtual console that is

BUT it will be MARCH or April for the SNES adapter release!!!! That is what I can't wait for - BRING IT ON!!!

Has anyone gotten the NES adapter yet???

they are just extremely popular. down here in Oz the machine got released on the 7th of December. First lot sold within 24 hours country wide. second batch from nintendo had retailers still taking pre-orders, most stores sold out all pre-orders for the second batch. Third batch was the same.

they have sold more than 5 million units, i guess that production just isn't meeting demand.

Xylob, if you want to sell your TG-16 plus games let me know. i will even ship it over here.

    BUMP!

They finally released the SNES adapter for the WII-Gamecube port!!!!! I just ordered it off of retrousb.com!!! I also bought a nes adapter as well. I was waiting until the snes adapter was released. There 20.00 each plus 6 shipping. Not too bad But now I'll be able to play my virtual console games EXACTLY like the originals!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!

I also have the complete MEGAMAN collection disc that was released for the Gamecube so I can now play those with the original NES controller!!!! I will love playing FZERO with the true SNES pad Not to mention Zelda Snes!!

Ah man this has been too long in coming. Now all I need is for Nintendo to finally release wii ports of TMNT 2 the arcade game, the Battletoads games, and let's see here, what else, maybe Topgun too??? Oh this will be even better then the classic controller!!!!

    BUMP AGAIN

In case any one was wondering I did get the controller adapters last week. I got one each - an NES and an SNES adapter.

THEY ARE PERFECT!!! Absolutely no lag whatsoever. The button response is as if you were playing on a true nes or snes. Playing ZELDA just felt so right - both the zelda 1 wii port and the zelda link to the past snes port.

Megaman is BRILLIANT now with the NES controller. Playing all the original NES games on the Gamecube collector disc is going to be a riot now - absolutely perfect control response.

I tell you playing FZERO on the original SNES controller is absolutely a blast - the virtual console port of the snes game is perfect graphically and now is dead-on with the original snes controller. I see they now have PUNCHOUT available for the virtual console - I still have some WII points available so I think I'll go ahead and grab that one of these days.

Why on earth they stopped using the hollowed out buttons on controllers I'll never know. You know how the original nes controllers had the curved inward buttons? Nowadays every controller has the opposite bumped out or wose, flat buttons. The response just isn't the same - maybe I'm too "old school" in that sense but I tell you there is nothing like the original to make a game play better

My quest has finally come to a close - this now makes the WII the perfect console for me - though I may still try to pick up a used PS2 just so I can play GUITAR HERO - though internet reports say a WII version will be coming out either late this year or early next year hopefully
