  1. In some posts on this and other forums i have noticed people tell others (who asked how to copy DVD) to use DVD Decrypter to remove the copy protection software and then to use DVD Shrink to shrink it to DVD5 size.

My question is....since DVD Shrink does the job of removing copy protection software or whatever its called, why do I need to use DVD Decrypter?

DVD Shrink removes some copy protection, mainly from older DVDs. In the last couple of years newer forms that DVD Shrink can't handle have been adopted. Decrypter also can't handle the newest forms, such a ArCoSS that Sony uses. For those, you need DVD Fab Decrypter or RipIt4Me or similar.

Even then a few DVDs will resist decryption and give all sorts of errors. Decrypter is now an older program and no longer being developed. RipIt4Me uses Decrypter and some other programs and works very well. At least for the present time. It integrates well with Shrink.

I still use the basic Shrink most of the time, but watch out for errors that will make the backup unusable.

DVDShrink (and in fact DVDDecrypter) can no longer handle newer copy protections such as sony arccos or ripgaurd so its now neccessary to use better ripping software such as ripit4me, dvdfabdecrypter or anydvd to rip newer dvds

Ripit4me actually still uses dvddecrypter to rip the disk but it first creates a 'prortected sector list' (psl) file to overcome the rip problems of arccos/ripgaurd ... after ripping it tidies up the ifo's etc by removing unreferenced material and dummy sectors in the dvd .... it will then use dvdshrink to fit it to a dvdr.

dvdfabdecrypter is just a ripper that deals with the newer protections ... after ripping with this app you can load the resultant files into dvdshrink as normal

Anydvd is an app that runs in the background to overcome newer protections ... use this in conjuction with other rippers such as dvddecrypter or even dvdshrink etc

DVDDecrypter does MUCH more in the way of "custom" ripping than DVDShrink. I stilll use both faithfully but when it comes to odd projects....DVDDerypter wins hands down. You may find the added benefits of DVDDecrypter later IF you decide to do more than simple backups of your originals.

    What hech54,
DVD Decrypter has a ton of uses that have nothing todo with removing copy protection's.
I still use both programs, DVD Decrypter almost daily, and DVD Shrink maybe once a week.
Also at one point in time, DVD Decrypter would & still does, remove copy protections that DVD Shrink could & can not remove. But that's all moot now as a lot of the latest copy protection's since they shutdown DVD Decrypter can not be removed by either program alone.

  6. What "other features" does DVD Decrypter do that you guys speak of? what you mean by "IF you decide to do more than simple backups of your originals"?

    I always thought that:
DVD Shrink = remove copy protection + shrink DVD
DVD Decrypter = remove copy protection of DVD's that DVD Shrink could not do.

Take a quick look towards the bottom of the DVD Decrypter toolpage for a few other things the program can do : https://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD_Decrypter

    What redwudz said..
TONS which as you progress into doing custom projects, you will learn and use.

Rip by chapter, rip by....well...NOTHING....leaving you with one giant lump of continuous video, rip by layer, cell, vob...anything you want, demuxing.

Shrink was only a moderately good ripper, even before the new copy protection came along. That said, it is faster to process the video from your HDD than from the optical drive, so it is generally more efficient to rip the HDD, then process from there with Shrink, rather than use Shrink directly.

Not to mention a whole lot better on your DVD drive (wear and tear etc) also.
    If in doubt, Google it.
