    Hi,

I am trying to copy my files that I created from one hard drive to the other and every time I try it gives me a error message:

    Cannot copy: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The disk is not full nor are the files currently in use. I went to properities and the files are write-protected. How do I get them unwrite protected? They are pictures I took with the cameral and I want to copy them from one hard drive to the other.

    Thanks sooo much!

  2. What happens when you right click on the file? What properties are available to you to possibly alter?

I've seen this happen with files copied from CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. I keep a copy of the Cygwin toolkit
    http://www.cygwin.com
on all my Windows PCs so I don't have to remember the Windows commands to do stuff like this. If you are not an experienced Unix user, I do not recommend that you install Cygwin.

Start a command window in Windows and I think this command will un-write protect the file:
    attrib -R FILE_NAME
where FILE_NAME is the name of your file. Change to the directory the file is in before you run the "attrib" command.

EDIT: I use a program named 'Unlocker' that cures most folder or file permissions when they are stuck. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Unlocker_d4660.html If this works, you can ignore the rest of this post.

Write protected or read only? If read only, that doesn't prevent them from being copied, just modified. What icon do they show? The program that the icon represents may have done something to them.

The files may be in use, sometimes Windows Explorer or other programs are keeping access to them or locked them, even if it's not obvious. If they are photos, I would suspect one of your photo viewing programs.

Or, you might not have permissions to copy or move the files. This happens at times, even without you doing it and even if you are logged on as administrator.

A couple of MS articles on file permissions. (Sorry, they are long. )
