  1. So here is what I'm looking to do:

Rip the DVD to my computer then seperate the AC3 2.0 audio from the video. Then edit the audio (nothing that affects length) by either converting to .WAV and editing through Audacity then converting back to AC3 or by using an AC3 editing program if it exists... Then mux the video and audio back together and put the VOB file back in the DVD w/o affecting the menus, chapters, etc... Is this possible? And if so, how would you go about it?

I have quite a slew of programs already so I may already have the tools but just some general recommendations on what I should do would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi-

Put the complete DVD onto the hard drive. Demux the video from the DVD using PGCDemux (don't forget to check the "Demux video stream" box). Hit "Check A/V Delay" to see if there's any audio delay you have to take into account when remuxing. Take the audio and do whatever you have to with it, but you can't edit AC3 audio. Remux the fixed audio, video, subs (if any) and chapters using Muxman. Don't forget to load the celltimes.txt by going File->Load Chapter. Give it a destination and "Start". Don't be alarmed if it seems to stop or freeze. It's still chugging away. When done it'll pop up a message.

At that point you'll have the fixed DVD with no menus. Open the original DVD - the one with menus - in VobBlanker. Highlight the video so it appears in the lower window. Highlight it again and hit the "Replace" button on the right. Browse to your menuless fixed DVD. Give it a destination and "Process".

When done you'll have the complete DVD, but with the fixed audio.

  3. I did something like that 18 months ago with some help from the guys at doom9.org

If you want to see the thread of that discussion, it's here:

  4. Exactly the same method I described, except you used the somewhat inferior IFOEdit for the remux.

What do you consider to be inferior with IFOEdit? I'm not trying to pick an argument, I'm just trying to understand why the one is better than the other.

  7. The fact that only one sub stream can be loaded for each track, for one thing. But that's minor. I use IFOEdit for authoring myself sometimes. I'm just going by what mpucoder has said in the past. As perhaps you know, he's the developer of Muxman.

In the Mod's Forum at Doom9 (so I can't link to the thread), Zeul (developer of DVDPlanner) has stated:
Any program that uses DVDAuthor is going to produce an output that isn't very compliant. It relies on mplex which is not great. With regard to Ifoedit and Rejig TBH i don't know how compilant these programs are, but, considering the authors i suspect they are. I do know however, that DVDPlanner and Muxman are strictly compliant which is why they were included.
    And mpucoder responded:
IfoEdit uses mplex as well, but modified to be a little more compliant.
So, the impression I get from this is that IFOEdit, while OK, isn't nearly as good as are Muxman and DVDPlanner. I'm far from an expert on this, though.

Thanks for the info! For some reason I didn't like Muxman when I first tried it but after reading this I think I have to try it again.

Are you sure? I have never had problems to add multiple sub streams.

  9. You can load both the Wide and the LB streams and have them wind up in the same track, the way you can with Muxman? If so, then I've overlooked something in IFOEdit.

No, you're right - I misunderstood what you meant.
